is exploring the notion of female beauty seen through the lens of one of the masters of fine art photography. In the following paragraphs we are presenting the erotic art of Edward Weston through the series of nudes taken during the zenith of the American Modernist movement. Edward Weston is an iconic figure in what is now perceived as classic photography, and widely celebrated for his famous black-and-white photo series of landscapes , close-ups of peppers, seashells and cabbage halves and, of course, his extensive sequence of nudes made in the twenty year long period in the first half of the past century. His figure studies are often made of his friends, family and the people he was in a personal and emotional relationship with. The timeline of his nude series coincides with the peak of the modernism in the US and Edward Weston was one of the pioneers of the movement in the field of photography. He first started his career in a pictorial style but swiftly changed his interest towards the more realistic and detailed approach to photography exploring the modernist aesthetic requirements and focusing on the complex search for the ideas of objects rather than the objects themselves in their physical and ephemeral state. Or as he states in one of his journals:.

In Weston made his last photograph; he had been stricken with Parkinson's disease several years earlier. On January 1,he died at Wildcat Hill, his home in Carmel, California. Read more. Tell the Publisher!

To buy one of the original prints is, quite simply, beyond my purse, but thankfully this book reproduces the images with the care and respect that Aperture characteristically brings to its monographs.

This is the third copy I've bought over the years; one stayed with a previous partner, and a second was given away as a gift, so I've bought another copy. Almost none of Weston's plates have been reproduced as decent-quality unlimited prints, so this Aperture monograph is as good as most of us will see, unless we're standing in front of one of the photographic prints in a museum exhibition.

Above all, this is a gorgeous collection of figure studies in black and white. Some photos, like the cover, celebrate the elegance of the human form.

history!

Others explore figure as a medium for abstraction - simple shape, almost detad from the person, quite unlike photo as portraiture. In a secondary way, this is a record of the time in which the photos were taken, mostly the s. Figure as abstraction was a relatively recent innovation, and Weston embraced it fully.

excellent, agree with

He also seemed to combine abstraction with darkroom technique, sometimes bordering on solarization. This also captures the style of the times, when shaving wasn't necessarily part of a lady's grooming - surprising to a modern eye, but a happy reminder that womanly beauty comes from the woman herself, not from products and processes she subjects herself to. The real surprise in this book, however, is the commentary by Charis Wilson.

remarkable, useful

She was Weston's wife for many years, and model for a huge part of Weston's figure ouvre. She gives unique insight into Weston's working style, one that treated the models as collaborators rather than raw material.

It is interesting that Wilson discusses Weston's work with other models with the same enjoyment she shows in discussing his work with her. As she points out, the photo is truly about the photographer more than it's about the model. And, because of her long and close relationship with Weston, this is a very affectionate discussion of his work.

Arrived on time; item as described. Great photos. book is a great representation of the movie detailing the relationship between weston and his passion for photography. arrived timely and in great shape.
